W. Vernie Reed Scholarship Application
In 1981 the W. Vernie Reed Scholarship Fund was established as a living memorial to the late W. Vernie Reed, General Secretary-Treasurer of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, who represented our Northwest Region. Since then, the scholarship fund has awarded over 550 scholarships, totaling over $1,200,000, to our members, their children and grandchildren from various Local Unions throughout the Region.
We should all take great pride that we have established such a fund in memory of one of LIUNA's past leaders, who fought so hard for every LIUNA member, Local Union and District Council. Through the generosity of Brother Reed’s friends and associates, a self perpetuating fund will provide a program of yearly scholarships to assist eligible worthy students in furthering their four (4) year undergraduate education. The first award was made in the Spring of 1981. We successfully raised $319,202, and $257,000 in scholarships were disbursed from last year's fundraising endeavors.
We are pleased to announce the availability of the following scholarships for the 2026 school year, totaling $257,500, for our members and their families.
For 2026:
Scholarship Awards:
■ One $11,000 scholarship, Pamela Reed winner
■ One $9,500 scholarship, Chuck Barnes
■ Twenty-two (22) $6,500 Local Union Scholarships
■ Six (6) $6,500 scholarships for the District Councils and Western Canada Sub-Regional Office
■ Ten (10) $5,500, At-Large scholarships
As in previous years, any $6,500 Local Union scholarship for which no application or qualified applicant is received will be made available to another Local Union

Vernie Reed Scholarship Committee, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each Local Union, District Council, Affiliated Fund, individual member, contractor, and consultant who contributed to the fund this year. Together, we are building a brighter future for our members and their families.
